The fact that the Once-ler founded and built Thneedville actually makes me so sad, because his legacy wound up being entirely forgotten. Never mind that he probably had loads of friends and was famous and rich and successful. When the Thneed stopped selling and he retreated into seclusion, no one missed him.
And, if his family was anything to go by, this was no shift from the usual.
No one ever missed him.
Which is why his reaction to when Ted comes back breaks my heart. “Aw, you missed me,” he said. He’s old and lonely, and no one has come by in years, but still he holds on to the idea that someone, even a little boy he met only the previous day, cared about him. Just a little bit.
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing’s going to get better, it’s not.”
I wonder if maybe, just maybe, the Once-ler wasn’t talking about the seed.
